Lifestyle Newborn Photo Sessions with Older Siblings

Repeat families are always the best! Having a chance to capture memories as your family grows is something very special. From your first lifestyle newborn photo session, to milestones, to yearly family photos, to welcoming your next little one. I love it all!

Being a boy mom myself, it’s always fun to welcome other moms into the club. The newborn stage is busy and hectic in a beautiful and exhausting way. Toddlerhood and just boyhood in general is the same but takes it to the next level! During newborn sessions, I like to keep it real and tell families of some of what I see as a boy mom. Depending on how school drop off went the day of your session will determine how much good vs. crazy you hear about!

During this family’s yearly session way back in July, they let me know that they would be welcoming another little guy to the mix in the new year! I thought back to their first little guys session and remembered loving the dark and moody vibes and we excited to get a chance to capture memories for another little guy in their home!

There is an unspoken rule that if your first baby is nice and sleepy and content for your session, your next one will be wide awake and particular about posing! This held true for their newest little guy. He was wide awake and not wanting to miss the action. He also had positions he just did not want to be held in. As a reminder, all of this is OK! I work with you and baby to get the most beautiful shots in the poses that make the tiniest clients happy!

The next step for lifestyle sessions the second (or third) time around is getting the older kiddos on board with all of the prompts. I have seen a wide variety of kiddos that don’t want anything to do with their new sibling and kiddos that can’t get enough of them. Again, all of this is OK! First and foremost, we make sure that baby is safe! So, if your older child is not wanting to hold baby then we switch to different shots. We show connection through simple touch to the hands or head. Thankfully during this session, after a more hesitant start big brother was very eager to participate!

All of these little tweaks during the session along with diaper and feeding breaks result in a beautiful session! It may feel like a lot to do pictures with a toddler and a newborn, but I promise to make it as relaxed as possible!
