First Birthdays & New-to-Me Families: A Session Worth the Wait

First birthdays and new-to-me families are always a win in my book — especially when the birthday girl is as absolutely adorable as last weekend’s little one.

Here’s something that happens more often than you’d think: you have every good intention of booking a newborn session, and then suddenly, baby arrives, life gets beautifully overwhelming, and before you know it — that tiny newborn is turning one. And honestly? There is no better time to finally start those family photos than a milestone as special as a first birthday.

Spring in Pittsburgh is a tricky season for outdoor sessions. Those warm teaser days pop up just enough to get you excited, but the truth is, the weather stays unpredictable and most things don’t really start blooming until late April. So, when this sweet mama reached out, her instinct was to shoot in their home — and I absolutely loved that idea. Home sessions mean you’re comfortable, there’s no commute, and we’re not playing guessing games with the forecast.

It didn’t take long for the birthday girl to warm up. She was happiest in her parents’ arms, but she was more than willing to play along and gave us the most genuinely sweet smiles. Her furry big brother, Gus, was equally enthusiastic about the whole thing — he had zero interest in sitting this one out, and honestly, we were better for it. We spent most of our time in the family room, where gorgeous natural light was just pouring in, and snuck away for a few tender moments in the nursery too.

This session was a reminder of why I love what I do. It’s never too late to start, and sometimes, waiting means you get to document something even sweeter.
