First birthdays are full of joy and some amazement that the first year went by so fast! With back-to-back first birthday sessions last week, I saw a little bit of everything when it came to cake smashes. Sometimes, even the happiest baby just isn’t sure about that big, gooey cake sitting in front of them. For this particular shoot we had the most cheerful little one who was all smiles and giggles… but when it came to smashing that cake? Not so much.

While we expected a frosting-covered mess, this little cutie decided the cake wasn’t quite her thing—more curious than messy! But that’s what makes these sessions so fun and real. Whether they dive right in or give the cake a hesitant poke, every moment is adorable and full of personality. So maybe there won't be a ton of frosting smeared images for the family to choose from, but there will be a whole lot of amazing moments I captured of the birthday girl and her parents.

One of the trickiest things for those winter birthdays is knowing where to have those first birthday pictures done. Winter in Pittsburgh can make outdoor photos tricky, but there are a couple options that work so well! An in-home session or a cozy studio are the perfect spots for a birthday shoot! For the sessions last week, we had no worries about the cold/snowy weather, we captured all the sweet moments in a warm, controlled setting, making sure the little one stayed comfy and happy. The result? A collection of sweet, candid photos that perfectly capture the joy and innocence of a first birthday—cake smash or not!
